The Sliema Local Council has officially launched a comprehensive travel guide aimed at enhancing the visitor experience while promoting sustainable tourism and cultural awareness in one of Malta’s most visited seaside towns.
Malta, 11th Jun 2025, Grand Newswire - SLIEMA, MALTA – June 2025 — The Sliema Local Council has officially launched a comprehensive travel guide aimed at enhancing the visitor experience while promoting sustainable tourism and cultural awareness in one of Malta’s most visited seaside towns.
The new guide, available both in print and as a downloadable PDF, offers curated recommendations for attractions, walking routes, and hidden gems across Sliema. It was developed in collaboration with local stakeholders, including tourism operators, cultural organizations, and environmental groups, with the goal of encouraging responsible travel and deeper engagement with the town’s heritage.
“This guide is more than just a list of sights,” said Councillor Maria Ellul, Chair of the Tourism and Culture Committee. “It reflects our commitment to preserving Sliema’s identity while helping visitors connect with the community, history, and environment in a meaningful way.”
Celebrating Sliema’s Rich Heritage
Nestled along Malta’s northeastern coastline, Sliema is known for its picturesque promenade, Victorian-era architecture, and vibrant dining and retail scene. Each year, the town welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists who come for sea views, shopping, and proximity to Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just across the harbor.
The guide highlights well-known landmarks such as Tigne Point, Balluta Bay, and St. Julian’s Tower, alongside lesser-known destinations like Independence Garden and hidden seaside swimming spots. It also features QR-enabled maps, local history blurbs, and tips on eco-friendly transportation such as walking, cycling, and public ferries.
A Tool for Locals and Tourists Alike
Designed to benefit both tourists and residents, the guide includes sections on seasonal events, community programs, and family-friendly itineraries. It encourages travelers to explore on foot, visit local artisans, and try traditional Maltese food such as pastizzi and ftira.
The Council emphasized that the guide supports Malta’s broader sustainable tourism goals and aligns with EU-funded initiatives to promote cultural preservation and environmental protection.
Where to Find the Guide
The Sliema Travel Guide is available for free download on the official Council website:

Printed copies will be distributed at local hotels, ferry terminals, and the Sliema Local Council Info Desk located at Triq Manuel Dimech. The guide is available in English and Maltese, with plans to expand into additional languages ahead of the summer tourist season.
Looking Ahead
As part of its ongoing tourism and urban engagement strategy, the Sliema Local Council plans to release seasonal updates and a digital companion app later this year. The initiative is part of a broader push to ensure tourism growth benefits both the local economy and community life.
“Sliema has much more to offer than beaches and boutiques,” Councillor Ellul added. “Through this guide, we want every visitor to discover the stories, values, and voices that make our town truly unique.”
